UPDATE on Memorial Construction!! Navigate to Memorial Plans/Research Page About the Project A portion of the Pine Grove Cemetery, in Westborough MA, is the site of approximately 700 unnamed graves. The majority of those buried there were people who died while committed inpatient at the Westborough State Hospital. People began being buried in these “potters” graves from the early 1900s, up until as recent as 1987. No family came to claim them, and the state institution would only pay the minimum for burial arrangements. In addition to the many hundreds of people buried there from the State Hospital, there are also the poor, transient, and babies buried in unmarked plots. The Westborough Cemetery Memorial Project Community was founded expressly to shine a light up and out for all those souls, hidden nameless, so long at Pine Grove Cemetery. Our committee’s charter is to raise the funds to pay for a Memorial to be erected at the Potter’s field which will include all the names of those buried there. To date, our lead researcher on the Committee, Barbara Banks, has been able to identify and verify close to 700 people’s names buried at the Potter’s field at Pine Grove. We’ve established ourselves as a non-profit entity. We continue to fund-raise and hold periodic Days of Remembrance for those buried at Pine Grove. So far, we’ve been able to raise enough money to complete the masonry for the entrance and viewing expanse for the Memorial. Our next goal is to raise enough to finish the Memorial, which includes purchase and placement of seven headstones with 100 names listed on each around the perimeter of the Memorial. Once we complete the Memorial structure, our goal is to hold memorial service open to all in the community, to come and honor those who have been forgotten for so long.
